NGC 253, also known as the Silver Coin Galaxy or Sculptor Filament Galaxy, is a prominent member of the Sculptor Group of galaxies, located approximately 11.4 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor. It is approximately 90,000 light year in diameter.

This intermediate spiral galaxy is one of the brightest galaxies in the night sky and is visible through a small telescope from Earth.

NGC 253 is known for its active star formation regions, which are lit up by numerous young, hot stars, giving it a bright and mottled appearance. The galaxy is also noted for its high dust content, which obscures parts of its spiral arms and core.
